The Internet in My Lifetime
11:44 AM | Author: Joseph Wegert
When I was young, I was enamored with the internet. I remember my dad connecting through the modem, strange sounds accompanying the connection. I wish connecting to the internet still made those sounds. Of course, now with cable internet being the standard at which all real Americans follow, there is no real reason except for a nostalgic feeling.
In my lifetime, the internet has gone from being nearly nonexistent, to absolutely necessary in weekly life, if not everyday. When I was young, 56k modems were standard, if you had the internet at all. Now, if I have to use a friend's computer that uses DSL, i feel as if everything is dragging slowly.

The internet used to be used mainly for email but is now used for everything from shopping and entertainment, to research and reading. I remember trying to play Runescape on an old 100MHz computer with a 56k internet connection. It was definitely not a fun experience. Now, if a computer cannot run a game like Runescape because of the internet connection, I would think something didn't work, either with the computer or the game, instead of blaming it upon just the slow connections and computer speed. We now live in a world of high expectations in which the internet is necessary, and if it's slow or the computer is not working, people get mad. We now rely upon the internet more than we know.

Wow I genuinely think I'd be scared if I met someone who couldn't run Runescape on their comp. Almost as scared as if I met someone who still played it. :-P Just kidding, probably.

Love the diagram you put up though, it's such a weird thing that something like a diagram on how to hook up a phone and computer to the same jack could elicit such happy memories.

Now to find a good old modem sound for my phone ringer.

I'm going to be completely honest, I miss the internet connecting noises too. They were almost soothing in a weird kind of way. Now those noises are just too primitive.

We certainly have come a long way from dial-up ..thank goodness. Your diagram reminded me of my recent internet experience this past week. I am a complete Learn-it-on-your-own kinda person... so I was on google and forums all week trying to set everything up.

I like your template.. I am trying to find one that I like but I am not familiar with HTML stuff... yet another thing I will have to learn

While I do have some nostalgia for the old dial-up-modem-connecting-to-the-internet sound, I am so glad that I don't have to connect at 2400 baud and wait and wait and wait.

The increasing speed that comes with cable and dsl connections along with the increased speeds of cpus is one of the things that's helped our online lives to increase so dramatically.

Can you imagine people hanging out on Facebook, downloading tunes, uploading videos, etc if we couldn't do so almost instantaneously?
